Summary:
In the united arab emirates they do not have many things that us citizens have such as freedom of speech and freedom of press. In this article Waleed al-Shehhi was given two years in prison and fined 500,000 dirhams for using twitter to question the handling of a political trial by authorities. He could not speak freely on what he thought. Before this took place, in march 2011 activists got persecuted for signing a petition to end this ridiculous law. but, the authorities are finding out that its hard to arrest people online more and more accounts are popping up to criticize the government there.
Reflection:
This makes me sick that someone could be punished so hard for talking about someone it makes me really appreciate all the freedoms I have in the u.s.a (thanks george washington)! I hope that this poor guy who innocently left a twitter comment ends up ok. What ever happened to the poor people that protested and stood up for what they believed in I hope there ok too. the fact that the government has so problem squashing peoples individualism and voice through throwing them in jail is unbelievable. I mean really? this article over all made me mad that there are people treating each other like this throughout the world makes me annoyed. Read and tell me what you think in the comments section.
Relate:
This is important to the politics of the united arab emirates because it means that the people over there lack the one thing i enjoy most the politics you cant say what7 you think about them or else you will be hunted down and thrown in jail. Your expected to do what ever they want you to do which is sad. Also that means that the president and prime minister agree with this ridiculousness which honestly makes me loose respect for them. I don't understand how people think its ok to violate and take away another humans basic rights.
